In May 2003, EWSolutions began an engagement with the Office of the Secretary of Defense, Logistics Systems Management (OSD/LSM) to design and implement a meta data repository architecture to support the entire DOD Logistics Community at an enterprise level. This repository will leverage Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) technology and utilize a decentralized architecture to manage both technical and business meta data. The goal of the Logistics DMDRA project is to improve data quality, accessibility, and interoperability across the DoD Logistics Enterprise. The project supports this goal by developing a prototype architecture to support discovering and managing metadata in a cross-services / decentralized business environment, across a number of DoD Logistics Communities of Interest (COI). The Logistics DMDRA prototype demonstrates a scalable, COTS-based meta data repository architecture that supports these objectives. The project currently includes core metadata shared by the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA), US Navy, and US Air Force.

In addition to the objectives mentioned above, the US Air Force is specifically interested in utilizing their local (COI) Distributed Meta Data Repository (DMDR) to manage a large portfolio of existing applications that run on a wide variety of platforms (e.g., IBM mainframe, Unisys, and Unix). DMDTA provides a COTS-based, automated capability to capture meta data from these various applications and integrate it in the local DMDR. From this integrated viewpoint, system redundancies can be more readily and reliably identified. The best of these applications can be selected for required enhancements, the impact of proposed changes determined, and less capable, redundant applications can be retired in order to reduce the overall cost of maintenance. The US Air Force local DMDR provides a COTS-based capability that will:

  • Support the management of a smaller, more cost-effective legacy application portfolio as well as newer operational and data warehousing systems
  • Enable data quality, data visibility and data understanding
  • Enable logistics application interoperability
  • Support Logistics “Enterprise” metadata reporting required by DISA for the DoD Metadata Registry
