Business Architecture | Enterprise Architecture | Data Management and Data Architecture

What attracted you to data management or IT, and why did you choose to pursue this career?

I am attracted by successful and growing companies. Good data and IT management are two key ingredients to growth.

What has been your greatest career accomplishment so far, and why has it been important to your career?

I have participated in the growth and success of Benchmark Consulting and its software application, IRIS Business Architect. Both should still be around once I retire. It is my legacy.

What are the two or three biggest challenges you face as a data management professional / CDO and how can we address them?

An important aspect of business architecture is modeling. It is mostly high-level data management of business and IT strategies. Keeping the data updated and making it useful to all (business and IT stakeholders) is a challenge. Allowing easy collaboration between all stakeholders involved in the planning or an organization ensures success and higher adherence.

How do you see data management / the role of the CDO / IT changing in the next 2 – 3 years?

Data volumes are increasing exponentially.  The challenge is to better understand what must be considered and what should only be deemed as only noise that adds confusion instead of clarity.

Do you have any planned next steps for your career?

Enhancing the practice of agile business and enterprise architecture practices in growing and successful companies worldwide.

What is the single best piece of advice you have received in your data management / IT career so far?  Why has it been so important to you?

Never underestimate the people component in any initiative and project you get to be involved with.  It is not just about architecture, processes, and data.  Success is primarily dependent on the ability of people to work together.

Can you share something about yourself as a person that people wouldn’t know about you?

I do not have an IT background, per se. I have an M.Sc. in Finance. My ecosystem for the last 30 years has been comprised of essentially IT experts from all fields. My data and IT knowledge are derived from their knowledge.
