What attracted you to data management or IT, and why did you choose to pursue this career?

I’ve always been interested in data, going back to starting my first consulting business after graduating from Babson College in 1987. I have worked in the data and data management fields my whole career.

What has been your greatest career accomplishment so far, and why has it been important to your career?

My greatest accomplishment is running my second consulting business, from 2007 to 2017, and helping dozens of different businesses with their data strategy, master data management, data quality, and data governance challenges.

What are the two or three biggest challenges you face as a data management professional / CDO and how can we address them?

  1. Talent: attracting and retaining a diverse, highly qualified team.
  2. Technology: implementing a next generation data governance, data quality, and data lineage platform over the next several years.
  3. Education: continually educating senior management about the strategic importance of data & analytics and guiding the evolution of their thinking about our firm’s data strategy.

How do you see data management / the role of the CDO / IT changing in the next 2 – 3 years?

We’ll continue to see more focus on the strategic benefits of data and analytics. Would like to see our firm focus more on AI and machine learning, and in particular on data ethics, and reducing societal harm from data and AI.

Do you have any planned next steps for your career?

I’m always interested in ways that I can contribute more and have more impact.

What is the single best piece of advice you have received in your data management / IT career so far?  Why has it been so important to you?

I had a manager at a “dot com” firm who had a big impact on my strategic thinking. He was good at empathy, putting himself in the other person’s shoes, and thinking through all the strategic alternatives using game theory and other techniques.

Can you share something about yourself as a person that people wouldn’t know about you?

I’m an avid sailor, and own a 38-foot sailboat, and am involved in local politics and community service, including serving as an Assistant Scout Master for one of our town’s Boy Scout troops.
